Why is the sky blue?
When you look up to the sky, depending on the weather and the time of day, The sky can appear to be different colours. What makes the sky blue on a sunny day, grey on a rainy day and black at night?
The sun produces light waves of different colours, When the colours mix they turn to white. The colours have different wave lengths. Red has a longer wave length than what blue has. Those colour waves travel all the way to Earth’s atmosphere.
In the Earth’s atmosphere there are particles which the light waves blend with. The blue and violet waves split and stretch across the sky. We can’t see the violet waves because our eye’s are more sensitive to blue. Red, yellow and green waves mix and turn into a yellowish white colour. This is why the sun looks yellow with a hint of white.
A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. Even though the sun’s light may look white/yellow it’s actually made up from all the colours of the rainbow. We can see these different colours of light in a rainbow or when white light passes through a prism.
